Adding extensions and functionality

We are often asked why our web hosting does not support XYZ technology and why it is not possible to add ABC extension to PHP.

Web hosting is a shared service. This means that several hundred of our customers have their websites hosted on one web hosting server. Any change to anything (adding a module, new technology, changing parameters and restrictions) can affect all of these customers at once - both positively and negatively. Maybe 1 customer would be happy that we have some new technology, but then there would be 100 customers who would have their website stop working due to possible incompatibility with other extensions or PHP applications.

Our goal is to provide a quality and stable service, and we want to run it safely - we don't install extensions that are unknown to us. We won't risk the problems that this could cause. We only install extensions that we know, have thoroughly tested and can guarantee that everything will work as it should.

We do not assume that web hosting will satisfy the requirements of all customers. This is not possible, there is always someone who needs some parameter differently than others. But for the vast majority of people, web hosting is quite sufficient.

If you are not satisfied with web hosting and need some special technologies or parameters, they are for you virtual servers. Here the customer has the whole server for himself and everything can be installed and configured completely according to his wishes (operating system, web server, PHP, database and any other applications).

Web hosting parameters and limitations

There are many different limitations on web hosting, e.g. max. size of databases, some unauthorized directives in htaccess, memory and time limitations on running PHP scripts, max. number of PHP processes per website, limitation of number of emails sent per day, etc.

All these restrictions have their justification. They are not here because we want to terrorize our customers. The limitations are here so that one site, for whatever reason, cannot cause an overload or other non-standard situation that would cause hundreds of other customers' sites to become inoperable. This is why the sites have "limits" set in this way.

It is a compromise between comfort and stability (and also security). It must be said that most of these parameters are fixed and cannot be changed in any way.

But here again - for the vast majority of customers, the parameters and limitations we set are absolutely sufficient.

New extensions in PHP

We are currently not planning to add any more extensions to PHP.

It may happen that we will add some highly requested extensions, but it is not a matter of days or weeks. We first test new extensions on our development servers for a long time, which can take several months. Only when we are sure that the extension works as it should and that nothing is broken by deploying it, we deploy it.

Unsupported PHP extensions

Examples of unsupported PHP extensions:

  • any extension from the PECL library
  • ffmpeg, mencoder, etc. - our webhosting does not serve as a computing cluster for audio and video conversion

Other unsupported technologies

  • SSH - we do not offer access to web hosting via SSH and will never offer it for shared webhositng, unlimited SSH is available on VPS
  • CGI, JSP and other languages and technologies - only PHP can be run on the webhosting, no other programs or scripting languages, we do not plan to change
  • ASP.NET - we only run webhosting on Linux, webhosting on Windows maybe in the future
